Dr. Julian Schott studied Indology, Philosophy and Religious Studies in Göttingen, Pune and Hamburg. During his bachelor and master studies (2014), he studied classical Tibetan in a part-time program for six years. His dissertation was conducted and funded at the Center for the Study of Manuscript Culture (CSMC) in Hamburg and, published in 2019, studies the esoteric Buddhist Apabhraṃśa poems (dohā) of Kṛṣṇacaryā and their commentary traditions written in Sanskrit and Tibetan, as well as its genre. His dissertation was the first in which one of the most important poems of his genre was comprehensively studied, edited and translated.

After having taught for one term each Sanskrit and classical Tibetan in the University of Sydney and the Rangjung Yeshe Institute, he, in 2020, returned to Hamburg for a three-year DFG funded project on Indrabhūti's Jñānasiddhi.


Research focus

His general expertise lies in the indo-Tibetan tantric traditions with a focus on primary Buddhist Sanskrit sources (manuscript studies) and Tibetan translation literature. Within this broad area, Julian has published on the Dohā traditions and their reception in the Tibetan cultural area and exegetical "siddha literature" such as those contained in the Grub pa sde bdun focusing on the Indo-Tibetan doctrine of the Great Seal (Mahāmudrā) and its Indian origins. 

Besides, Julian is involved in field of contemplative sciences.
