Alexander's Indian campaign (327-325 B.C.) undoubtedly marked a turning point in the history of the relations between Greeks and Indians.

Nevertheless, the real significance of this turning point is still obscure, particularly if we consider the aspect of the alleged Indo-Greek philosophical debate. The lecture will deal with the Graeco-Roman doxographers' understanding of the variegated and complex Indian thought, which was embodied for the ancients in the figure of the gymnosophist, the 'naked philosopher'.
