Whether the Pātañjalayogaśāstravivaraṇa (YVi), a commentary on the Pātañjalayogaśāstra (the Yogasūtra plus the Yogabhāṣya), is a work of the famous Śaṅkara, the author of the Brahmasūtraśāṅkarabhāṣya (BSBh), is an open question. In the present talk, I will first present a chronology of various views regarding this problem. This will be followed by examinations of underlying theoretical and technical issues. I will then discuss my personal views and approaches to the problem that have evolved over the years. The final part of the presentation will introduce my current focuses that might finally give some answers to the authorship problem. One focus is the question if Maṇḍana Miśra, whom I consider to have known both the BSBh and the YVi, thought that the two works have the same author.
