Gaṇeśa v. Kuśīlavau Myths and Reality of the Oral Composition of the Sanskrit Epics

Gaṇeśa as the scribe to whom Vyāsa dictates the Mahābhārata and Kuśa and Lava as the first reciters of the Rāmāyaṇa can stand for the contrast between oral and written transmission. I will examine the issues surrounding the oral composition and subsequent commitment to writing of both texts, along with recent challenges to established views on this.
