The presentation will focus on the problems encountered by Indian immigrant women in Canada who face cultural constraints in accessing the benefits of state policies targeted at domestically abused women. Findings from an exploratory study of abused immigrant Indian women and interviews with community social workers in Ontario will be presented. They expose the pressure of cultural, social and family ties that prevent these women from obtaining the necessary help offered by the policies of a developed country when they become victims of domestic violence.
