Eli Franco studied philosophy and Jewish philosophy at the University of Tel Aviv (B.A. 1976), and Indology at the École des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Diplôme 1978) and the Université de Paris X and Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, Ve section (Doctorat 3e cycle 1980 with the thesis: "Lokāyata, la philosophie dite matérialiste de l’Inde classique"). He received a Habilitation in Indology and Buddhist Studies at Hamburg University (1997) and Vienna University (2000).

He held teaching positions at Tel Aviv University and La Trobe University; in 2004 he was appointed full professor and director of the Institute for Indology and Central Asian Studies, Leipzig University. He was also a visiting Professor at the École Pratique des Hautes Études in 2005.  In 2012, he was elected as a Fellow of the Saxon Academy of Sciences.

Among several prestigious scholarships, one may mention Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship (1982-1983) and Wissenschaftskolleg (Institute of Advanced Studies) zu Berlin Fellowship 1989-1990). Further scholarships in Jerusalem, Paris, Vienna, Hamburg, Kyoto, Tokyo and Oslo.

He conceived and conducted several research projects, notably, six DFG projects and one long term project at the Saxon Academy of Sciences. In addition to the present project at the University of Vienna, he currently conducts two further projects, at the University of Leipzig (Digital Critical Edition of Nyāyabhāṣya 2018-2027) and at the Saxon Academy of Sciences (Buddhist Murals of Kucha on the Northern Silk Road 2016-2030)

Franco participated in dozens of international conferences, often in organizational capacity, and gave numerous guest lectures (estimate over 100).
