Frequently Asked Questions

Examinations

/

  • Where do I find the examination dates?

Examination dates for courses of type "VO" (lectures, i.e. non-continuous assessment) can be found in the course directory under each course. You can register right there as well. (Note that this does not apply to the module examinations of our STEOP courses, as module examinations are not connected to a specific course).

If you have questions on examination of a continuous assessment course, please contact the lecturer.

If you have registered for an examination, this registration is binding! If you have registered, but cannot participate, please deregister before the deadline. In case of examinations of a non-continuous assessment lecture, the following applies: If you have registered, but do not appear for the exam without having deregistered, you will be blocked from registration for the next date of examination.

  • I want to register for the examination of one of the STEOP courses, but cannot find the dates!

Being module examinations, the STEOP examinations are exceptional: You can find them in u:find if you go to chapter "14.03 - South Asian, Tibetan and Buddhist studies"; go to sub-chapter "Introductory and Orientation Period". Click on the desired module examination. There you will be shown all examination dates, and can register for the desired one.

  • An examination grade appears in the wrong place in the curriculum in my record. How can I have that changed?

For changes of grades in your record, please contact the Studies Service Unit.

Please write an e-mail to Mr. Alexander Minnich, giving the following details:

    • Your Matrikelnummer
    • Date and Title or Number of the course and the grade which is in the wrong place
    • The module in your curriculum where the grade should appear correctly.

Attention! This simple procedere is only possible if the course assessed was intended for the desired module in the first place by the directorate of studies. If this is not the case, you have to take upt htis matter with the directorate of studies.

To find out which module the course was intended for in the first place, please consult u:find and search for the desired course. Scroll down to the end of the page, where you will find the information "association in the course directory".

  • I have to get one or more examinations approved by official notice. How do I do that?

On our website you find the page "Forms and Information sheets". There you can download the Forms "Antrag auf Anerkennung von Prüfungen" and a list to fill out. Please complete pages 1 and 3 of the "Antrag" and the list and make an appointment with our vice director of studies. He will check if the examinations can be approved and give his determination. Please submit the now complete forms at the Studies Service Unit. Once the official confirmation is ready, you will be contacted by e-mail to collect it.

  • I failed an exam three times! What now?

As soon as an examination has been assessed 3 times negative, a commissional repeat examination is necessary. The 4th examination is then taken before an examination senate with at least three members. The registration for the commissional re-examination takes place at the SIAMOS Student Services Office.

Please read our information sheet. You will find the corresponding form under "Forms and Information Sheets".

  • Information on alternative methods of examination

Students with impairments have the right to alternative methods of examination (German: abweichende Prüfungsmethoden). The aim is to compensate for disadvantages caused by the impairments. For general information on this topic, please visit the website of Team Barrierefrei (German): https://studieren.univie.ac.at/barrierefrei-studieren/anpassungen-bei-pruefungen-und-lehre/im-studium/abweichende-pruefungsmethoden/

The following recommended procedure applies to the exams and courses offered by our directorate of studies (SPL 14: South Asian, Tibetan and Buddhist studies):

    1. Consultation/office hours of the directorate of studies
    2. Submission of the application form to the directorate of studies in person during the consultation or by email, using your u:account address

Concerning the medical/therapeutic evidence, we suggest that you use the University's form to confirm functional impairments relevant to studies (Bestätigung studienrelevanter Funktionsbeeinträchtigungen). The form is designed in a way that no medical terminology needs to be used. This makes it easier for the directorate of studies to process your application. For general information on types of evidence, please click here (German): https://slw.univie.ac.at/studieren/barrierefrei-studieren/anpassungen-bei-pruefungenlven/nachweis-der-beeintraechtigung/

If available, you can voluntarily send documents from your time at school or other higher education institutions / degree programmes, which describe adaptations or assistive technology used for you. These can help us to process your application for alternative methods of examination.

Schedule enough time for us to process the application and for the lecturer(s)/examiner(s) to prepare the alternative methods. Therefore, please always submit your application as soon as possible.

Please note: Other administrative regulations might apply to courses/exams offered by other directorates of studies (additional degree programme, extension curriculum, teacher education subjects, etc.). Please check the respective website for information.

  • Do I have to register for a course type "VO" as well?

YES! Registration for non-continuous assessment courses (course type "VO") starts in winter term 2018/19. Registration will be possible all semester, starting in September. You can register any time via u:space. The registration is also necessary if you need to use Moodle.

Important! Please note that you have to register separately for the exam date chosen of the VO-course!

  • I missed the deadline for registration! What do I do now?!

    Please mind the deadlines!

Alternatively, it is possible to register manually after the deadline. Please contact the lecturer. The lecturer needs to write an e-mail to the secretariat, giving their approval for the late registration and providing a reason. The e-mail must also contain your Matrikelnumber and the number of the course.

The same applies to deregistraton after the deadline.

If you have technical problems registering, please contact the secretariat immediately (before the deadline!).

  • I registered for a course, but my status is "vorgemerkt"

When registering during the registration period, your registration is marked as "vorgemerkt". At the end of the registration period, places will be assigned to the registered students automatically. Your status will change to "angemeldet" ("registered").

If the registration period ends after the first session of the course, attend the course, even if your status is still "vorgemerkt".

  • Which courses do I have to attend in my 1st semester?

At the beginning of your BA studies, you musst attend:

    1. the so called "introductory and orientation period" (STEOP)
    2. your first language (you can choose between Classical Sanskrit, Modern South Asian Language and Classical Tibetan)

    The STEOP consists of

    • introduction to pre modern South Asian Studies
    • introduction to Tibetan and Buddhist Studies
    • introduction to modern South Asian Studies

These three courses end with the beginning of the Christmas holidays. In January, the examination period for the STEOP courses begins. You must complete all three STEOP examinations before taking the exam of your first language course.

  • I want to start my studies in the summer term. Is that possible?

We highly recommend starting your studies in the winter term! The curriculum is adapted to that. If you start in the summer term, it is not possible to finish your studies in 6 semesters as intended.

If you insist on starting in the summer term, please note the following

    - you have to assess your STEOP courses as soon as possible, right at the beginning of summer term (March). However, the STEOP courses, are only offered in the winter term. This means you have to prepare for the exam on your own. Please contact the lecturer of each STEOP course of the former winter term for their course materials.

    - According to our curriculum, you should attend the course of your fist chosen language in your first semester. However, in the summer term beginners' courses are not offered; you will have to wait for the winter term

    - When you have completed the STEOP course exams, you can attend courses of modules 3, 4 and 5. These are proseminars, which means there are continuously assessed. The registration period will probably be over once you have completed your STEOP examinations. Please contact the lecturer of the chosen proseminars to have you manually registered after you have assessed the STEOP.

  • I want to register for the examination of one of the STEOP courses, but cannot find the dates!

Being module examinations, the STEOP examinations are exceptional: You can find them in u:find if you go to chapter "14.03 - South Asian, Tibetan and Buddhist studies", go to sub-chapter "Introductory and Orientation Period". Click on the desired module examination. There you will be shown all examination dates, and you can register for the desired one.

  • Can I take up my studies without knowledge of German?

We offer courses in English in both our B.A. and M.A. study programs. This depends on our (guest) lecturers, though. Most likely you will have to attend and complete courses in German, too.

  • I'm interested in the PhD study program.

Please see our website study programs for information about our PhD study programs. You will also find links to the Center for Doctoral Studies.

  • I have no admission to the University of Vienna yet. May I attend courses without admission?

Unfortunatedly  attendance of courses is not possible without admission.

If you are admitted to another university in Austria, you can co-register at the University of Vienna; in that case, attendance is permitted.

  • Is it possible to participate in courses without a secondary-school graduation?

It is possible with a so-called "university entrance qualification examination" ("Studienberechtigungsprüfung"). Please see the website "Teaching Affairs and Student Services".

If you have questions about the university entrance qualification examination in the framework of our study programs, please contact our directorate of studies.
