Places
Erasmus stays are only possible at universities with which there are agreements in our field of study. You can search for available places in our field of study on the website of the Erasmus Office.
-
Requirements
General Requirements:
- You are a regular student of the University of Vienna.
- You will have completed at least two semesters in the relevant field of study by the start of your ERASMUS+ stay.
We generally recommend the ERASMUS stay at the earliest after having finished the "Studieneingangs- und Orientierungsphase" (STEOP) and the introduction to your first language.
Language certificate:
For all non-German-speaking partner universities a language certificate is required that is not older than four years at the time of application. The required level of language proficiency is prescribed by the host universities (at least B1). The specificly required levels can be found on the website of the Erasmus Office. Please contact your preferred host university in order to find out about specific language requirements and whether it demands an additional language certificate (like TOEFL, IELTS, etc.).
It should be taken into account that a language certificate in the respective national language is required by francophone universities in Belgium and Switzerland, and by all partner universities in France, Italy, Spain and Portugal. Universities not located in anglophone or Romance-speaking countries (e.g., in Scandinavian or Eastern European countries) usually demand English language certificates. You should also make sure that the host university offers a sufficient amount of suitable courses in English.
The required proof of the language level has to be provided by the time of application. If you apply for several countries with different languages, several language certificates may be required.↗︎ Further information on the language certificate

- Proof of identity (passport or identity card, no driver's licence)
Selection criteria:
- Formal qualifications are fulfilled
- Academic achievements and progress (minimum requirement: passed STEOP)

The nominated students will be notified by e-mail by the International Office and will then be informed which further documents they have to submit.

Choice of Courses and Learning Agreement
Learning Agreement:
The Learning Agreement determines which courses you will attend during your stay abroad, and how many ECTS points you will receive for them. Detailed information on the Learning Agreement can be found on the website of the International Office. You will create the Learning Agreement directly from your workflow in Mobility Online.
First you have to gather information on the course offer at your host university and compare their curriculum to your present one. Then talk to the mobility coordinator about the courses you plan to take. At our department, the completed Learning Agreement is signed by the mobility coordinator and the vice study programme director ("Vize-Studienprogrammleitung") and subsequently uploaded to Mobility Online.
You have to find out when the Learning Agreement has to be submitted to your host university. It lies within your own responsibility that the host university will receive the Learning Agreement in time; most universities require this document as part of the registration procedure. Should the host university not require the learning agreement at the time of your registration, please send a scan of the Learning Agreement to the host university for signing. Then upload the Learning Agreement signed by the host university to Mobility Online.
ECTS points and courses:
In general, students should obtain 30 ECTS points during an ERASMUS semester. In order to be eligible for the ERASMUS+ grant, a minimum of 3 ECTS points per month that are recognised at the University of Vienna should be obtained. Should these minimum requirement not be met, students have to repay the grant.
As of the academic year 2021/2022, Erasmus+ stays abroad for the purpose of writing your Master's thesis or dissertation are no longer possible.
However, in connection with the writing of a Master's thesis, the Erasmus+ funding scheme for internships in other European countries can be used for a stay abroad.
Furthermore, grants for short-term scholarly research abroad (KWA) continue to be available for research abroad as part of the work on a master's thesis or dissertation.
A new Erasmus+ program that will allow short-term mobility specifically related to dissertation work is being planned.
You have to find out which courses incoming students are allowed to take at your host university. In order to make the choice of courses easier, it is recommended to reserve optional courses ("Alternative Erweiterungen") for the ERASMUS stay.
In our field of study, the following rules apply when you choose your classes:
- In general, Bachelor seminars must not be taken abroad
- Final papers written for a proseminar or seminar must be submitted for recognition of these courses.
Changes to the Learning Agreement:
In most cases, the course catalogue for your ERASMUS+ semester will be published only shortly before the semester starts. Since you have to submit your ERASMUS+ application much earlier than that, it is understandable if you will need to make changes to your course programme later on. You should inform the the mobility coordinator and the vice study programme director about any changes to your Learning Agreement as soon as possible. This is the only way to make sure that your courses will be recognised after your return.
In the case of changes, you will create a Learning Agreement During the Mobility directly from Mobility Online in which you specify the changes to the courses, and send it to the vice study programme director and the mobility coordinator for signing. You should then upload the Learning Agreement During the Mobility signed by the vice study programme director, the mobility coordinator and the host university to Mobility Online. Further information on the Learning Agreement During the Mobility can be found here.
Please also find out how the matter is addressed at your host university.
-
Recognition of courses
On your return, you should create the Learning Agreement After the Mobility from Mobility Online and have your vice study programme director recognise the courses completed abroad as part of your studies. For this, you will also need the transcript of records of your host university. You should then upload this transcript of records and your Learning Agreement After the Mobility, or the certificate of recognition, to Mobility Online.
→ Form "Antrag auf Anerkennung von Prüfungen"
→ Form "Auflistung der anzuerkennenden Prüfungen"
Further advice on the recognition of courses:
- Always discuss the courses you plan to take and are actually taking abroad with your mobility coordinator and vice study pogramme director, including changes to the course programme during the mobility.
- The recognition of courses is usually easier in the case of optional courses ("Alternative Erweiterungen") than in the case of compulsory courses. It is therefore advantageous to reserve at least some of these courses for your ERASMUS+ stay.
- If you are nominated for an ERASMUS+ place by way of a registered extension curriculum ("Erweiterungscurriculum"), the (vice) study programme director of the field of study of the EC is responsible for the recognition of the courses.
