The lecture will focus on 2 lexemes which are classified in Mayrhofer’s Eymologisches Wöterbuch des Altindoarischen as belonging to the “jüngere Sprache”. The words in question — the noun tumburu- m. and the verbal root kard (a by-form of pard) — are already attested, however, in the hitherto unpublished parts of the Paippalādasaṃhitā of the Atharvaveda. The lecture will present the contexts in which these words occur, discuss the philological and linguistic problems surrounding tumburu- and kard, and attempt to determine their meaning. In so doing, it will provide a glance into the kitchen of the ongoing international efforts to publish this important Vedic text, which contains so many additions to the Vedic lexicon.
