Alexander Wrona (an MA student of this institute and an employee of the South Asian, Tibetan and Buddhist Studies Library) was invited to participate in a two-week “Intensive Workshop on Textual Criticism of the Pāli Canon” at the Dhammachai Tipiṭaka Project in July 2015. In this talk he will present an overview of the project and share some of his experiences in Thailand with the audience.
Although canonical Pāli texts have been printed in the East and West for 160 years, there still exists no critical edition of the Pāli canon. Therefore, in 2010 the Dhammachai Tipiṭaka Project was inaugurated at Wat Phra Dhammakāya, Thailand with the purposes of 1) creating the very first truly critical edition of the Pāli canon and 2) preserving and documenting the literary heritage of Theravāda Buddhism.
