24.03.2023 15:15 - 16:45

Csaba Dezső | Department of Indian Studies, Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest

In this lecture, I will study poems of praise and blessing addressed to the Buddha(s), Bodhisattvas, and to Śiva and his household in two early anthologies from Bengal, the Subhāṣitaratnakoṣa and the Saduktikarṇāmṛta, and in the Buddhist hymn Lokeśvaraśataka. Some topics to be discussed will be imitation and emulation, trends and recurring tropes, and tradition and innovation. I will also address the question whether we can speak about kāvya that is specifically Buddhist or Śaiva.
