For Rong zom chos bzang (11 century) and th’Ju Mi pham (1846-1912), the view (darśana, lta ba) of the Mahāyoga tantras is clearly superior to that of the sūtras. While thus ascribing a superior veridical value to the tantric teachings, Rong zom and Mi pham define saṃvṛti as great purity (dag pa chen po) and the ultimate truth as great equality (mnyam nyid chen po). In the lecture we will consider their attempts to prove the thesis that all appearance is pure (dag pa’i snang ba) and that the ‘obscuring’ (saṃvṛti) is in fact pure and divine.
