When one hears a sound, does the auditory faculty travel towards the source of the sound (extramission theory), or does the sound arrive at the auditory faculty from its source (intromission theory), or is there a remote action? Discussing this issue of auditory perception, Kumārila, in the śabdādhikaraṇa section of the Ślokavārttika, criticizes the extramission theory of the Sāṃkhya school. In this presentation, Dr. Shida will introduce the framework of this polemic, propose an emendation of the manuscript reading based on contextual and terminological considerations, and investigate the usage of the word “anuvāta-“ in a broad corpus of Sanskrit texts.
