The adoption of a classification of the grammatical object formulated by Bhartrhari (5th c. CE) at the hands of
Cēnāvaraiyar (13th-14th c. CE), a commentator of the Tolkappiyam,vis presented as a case study for the encounter between the Sanskrit and Tamil literary cultures, suggesting a historical picture – still largely elusive – of complex intellectual exchanges across the boundaries between languages, countries and religious affiliations.
