The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries represent a moment of great ferment in India's literary history. In the trend towards vernacularism, classical models are adapted to build the literary heritage of modern languages. Literary productions in the “vernacular millennium” are the result of the interplay between sacred languages and idioms of power. They also reveal more complex dynamics in the network of Indo-Persian courts. Literary, artistic and religious patronage of new devotional cults legitimizes emerging Rājpūt rulers in the balance of power with the empire. Through a selection of examples taken from the rīti heritage in Braj Bhāṣā (Keśavdās, Bhikhārīdās, Dev, Kavīndrācārya Sarasvatī), we will see how Indo-Persian aesthetics is built in the service of the new emerging authorities.
