Cosmopolitical Himalayas: Humans and Non-Humans in Indigenous Mythologies

12.10.2023 17:30 - 19:00

Davide Torri | Università degli Studi di Roma "La Sapienza"

This talk deals with ideas about landscape and environment as they emerge from the ritual narratives and activities of indigenous religious specialists of the Himalayan region, in order to highlight the deep web of entanglements between human and other-than-human communities.

In particular, the motifs of crisis and disaster will be taken into account to explore some of the connections bridging the gap between humans and non-humans, showing how, in indigenous mythologies, the notion of personhood transcends the human dimension in order to include mountains, waters, plants, animals and other classes of beings.
