Cristina Pecchia received a PhD in Indology from the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. As a philologist working primarily with texts in Sanskrit, she specializes in Indian Buddhist epistemology and the cultural and intellectual history of South Asia, with a special focus on the Ayurvedic tradition and the history of philology. She also works on theoretical aspects of the philological method applied to Sanskrit texts.

At present, she leads the FWF (Austrian Science Fund) research project “Ayurveda and Philology” at the University of Vienna and is affiliated researcher at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. She was Principal Investigator of two FWF projects on the four Truths in Indian Buddhist epistemology (2013-16 and 2018-22), based at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Prior to this, she worked in a series of FWF projects on “Ayurveda and philosophy”.

• South Asian and Buddhist studies, in particular the Buddhist epistemological tradition

• Ayurvedic tradition in the cultural and intellectual history of South Asia

• Manuscript studies, history of the book, and methodology of textual criticism with reference to Sanskrit texts

• History of philology in South Asia
