The Birth of Uttara-Mīmāṃsā. A new look at the early history of Vedānta from a hermeneutic point of view

06.11.2015 15:15 - 16:45

Hugo David | Maître de conférences, École Française d'Extrême-Orient, Paris

In this lecture, I propose to consider early Vedānta (i.e., from the beginnings to the eighth century) in terms of hermeneutic concepts and practices rather than in terms of doctrine. I shall trace the appearance and evolution of some key categories (upaniṣad, vedānta, trayyanta, arthavāda, pravāda, etc.) in various sources (Vedāntic works, grammars, doxographies, etc.) and investigate the implicit conceptions of Scripture underlying their use. The question of the relationship between Pūrva- and Uttara-Mīmāṃsā will then be reconsidered on this background.
