142167 EX Culture and Practice: Religious Pilgrimage Sites and Buddhist Architecture in the Himalayan Region (2026S)

From 29th  of August until 13th of September 2026 all Bachelor students can participate in an excursion to Bhutan and Nepal.

The excursion has limited places. Please kindly register your interest with: istb@univie.ac.at. To finally confirm, you will need to enroll in the module 15a once enrollment opens. The module is divided into two sevenday segments: one in Bhutan emphasizing tantricBuddhist traditions of Tibetan imprint, and one in Nepal exploring the Kathmandu Valleys monuments and practices.

In Bhutan, participants visit major fortresses and temples, pilgrimage sites, monasteries, libraries, and art workshops, complemented by lectures on local history, pilgrimage, scholarship, and the links between religion and politics. In Nepal, students tour the historical cities of Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur, examine architecture and inscriptions, and engage with local cultures and the main religions represented at key pilgrimage sites. Encounters with local cultural groups are planned, and, when feasible, curated activities as dancing, singing, handicrafts, and rituals support exchange.
