Hagiographies of Two Women Saints in Eleventh-century Tibet: Ma gcig Lab sgron and Ma gcig Zha ma

In this seminar, we will explore the biographies of two women who lived in Tibet in the eleventh century, a period that was very important for the formation of Tibetan religious traditions.

Both women saints shared the teachings of Pha Dam pa Sangs rgyas (died 1117) and were prominent figures in the emerging Vajrayāna traditions, Ma gcig Lab sgron in the gCod tradition and Ma gcig Zha ma in the Lam 'bras tradition. Reading their histories will help us to contextualize one of the most interesting periods of Tibetan civilization.

Bon Origin Myths and Cosmogonies: Strategies of Legitimization of a Religious Tradition

In the literature of the Tibetan Bon tradition we find interesting theogonic or cosmogonic narratives, mythical accounts and apotropaic rituals that are rarely found in the mainstream Buddhist literary traditions of Tibet. Followers of the Bon school generally consider them as the heritage of the archaic cultural milieu of indigenous pre-Buddhist Tibet.

In this class, we will explore some Bon origin myths and cosmogonies trying to figure out the strategies adopted by the authors to form a non-Buddhist tradition with its own raison d'être by employing markedly different elements that would be recognizable as indigenous and originating in ancient times. In this way an extremely fascinating literary corpus was formed, containing a wealth of elements of different origin, some endogenous, others exogenous, but with its own inner coherence and poetics.
