1) In Search of the Missing Definition of Beauty (saundarya) in Abhinavagupta’s Work

Mo, 11.3.2019, 11:15-12:45, SR 2 SAK

We will focus on a crucial passage of the Abhinavabhāratī (GOS IV Ed., Vol. I, p. 279 = GOS II Ed., Vol. I, p. 285) centred on saundarya in the rasa chapter, also in the light of the main available translations (Gnoli, Cuneo, Pollock) and the related passage in Hemacandra’s KA. The missing definition of saundarya can be indirectly built through investigating into the causes of its “absence”.

2) Abhinavagupta’s Attitude towards yoga

Fr, 15.3.2019, 13:30-15:00, SR 3 SAK

A major characteristic of the aristocratic attitude – and I would not know how to better define the flavour that pervades the whole of Abhinava-gupta’s work – is the downgrading of all painful effort, seen as a plebeian feature. The aristocrat intends to show that what inferior people can achieve only at the cost of long and painful exercises is accessible to him promptly and very easily. This can be clearly detected in Abhinavagupta’s attitude towards yoga, or, to be more precise, towards Pātañjala yoga.
