Pāṇini, the foremost grammarian of Sanskrit, composed his grammar not for beginners but for specialists. This is evident from the “hightech” mechanism which lies at the basis of his composition. This mechanism consists of a well-developed metalanguage involving technical vocabulary, abbreviatory devices, such as shortforms and markers, and technical syntax.

Scholars have already discovered prominent aspects of his metalanguage. An attempt will be made to take a glimpse into Pāṇini’s workshop in order to reexamine the aspects of his metalanguage which have been discussed by scholars.
