Conferences Hosted by the ISTB
In 1990 the former Department of Indology hosted the eighth World Sanskrit Conference. Selected papers read at the conference were published in a supplementary volume of the 'Vienna Journal of South Asian Studies' (WZKS vol. 36, 1992).
Two further conferences of international importance were organized by the former Department of Tibetan and Buddhist Studies in cooperation with the Institute for the Cultural and Intellectual History of Asia of the Austrian Academy of Sciences: the second International Dharmakīrti Conference in 1989, which provided essential impulses for the investigation of Buddhist logic and epistemology, and the seventh Seminar of the International Association for Tibetan Studies at Schloß Seggau, Graz in 1995. The proceedings of both conferences were published by the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
The ISTB also arranges symposia and workshops on special themes; the more recent ones dealt with the Indian scholar, traveller, author and political activist Rāhula Sāṅkr̥tyāyana (2007) and ritual speech in the Himalayas (2009). In June 2010, the ISTB held a workshop dealing with "Public Sphere and Print Media in Nepal", and in March 2011, a workshop on "Information Technologies and Innovation in Sanskrit-Based Indian Studies" was organised together with the Indian Embassy at Vienna.
