We shall present a general picture of the linguistic situation in South Asia and look at questions regarding typology, language-area, contact and convergence, and sociolinguistics as thrown up by that situation.

In addition to individual articles, photocopies of which will be made available, we shall use the following books as our main resources for discussions. Parts of these will be required reading for the course, and the students will be examined on those parts and on the lectures.
